Best 4-year CD rates for October 2025

Rates updated between Oct. 22 and Oct. 28

At Bankrate we strive to help you make smarter financial decisions. Though our partners compensate us from links on this page, we maintain editorial integrity, and partners don't influence our product evaluations. Here's how we make money and here is our advertiser disclosure.

The top four-year CDs have something in common: they offer savers a higher yield than most savings accounts and money market accounts. Combine that with a guaranteed rate of return and safety (when you choose a federally insured account), and these investments are worth considering.

What is a 4-year CD?

A four-year CD is a certificate of deposit that guarantees the same APY on your money for the duration of the 48-month term. In exchange for this guarantee, you agree to leave your funds untouched for those four years. If you want to take your money out early, you’ll likely be charged an early withdrawal penalty.

If the aim is a higher yield, not an average, so-so return, a 4-year CD delivers predictability because of its longer term. Just be sure you can leave the money alone that long. Cashing out early typically triggers a penalty that can eat into the gains.

How to find the best 4-year CD rates

Start by comparing rates offered by online financial institutions and don’t settle for an average yield. The best four-year CDs pay about two times more than the national average of 1.78 percent APY, according to Bankrate’s most recent national survey of banks and thrifts on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

APYs on CDs and other deposit accounts remain high even as the Federal Reserve has cut rates and is signaling more rate cuts will come, Mark Hamrick, Senior Economic Analyst at Bankrate points out. “There’s a lot to like about locking in that superior yield to get a predictable return on one’s money.” He advises, however, to be aware of early withdrawal penalties and to opt for a federally insured account.

Pros and cons of 4-year CDs

Pros

  • Checkmark Icon

    You’ll earn a fixed APY.

  • Checkmark Icon

If your account is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) or the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) — and you’re within the insurance guidelines — your money will be backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. This means each depositor is insured up to $250,000 per insured institution, per account category.

  • Checkmark Icon

If APYs end up decreasing, you’d be locked in at a higher rate for the next few years.

Cons

  • If rates start increasing, the funds in a four-year CD may return less interest than you might otherwise be able to earn.

  • If you need to make an early withdrawal, you’re likely subject to a penalty.

  • A four-year CD might not keep up with inflation over time, causing your money to lose purchasing power.
