Overview
Citibank is a good option for those looking for an institution with global reach and the fullest possible range of deposit and lending products. People who live in areas eligible for Citi’s Accelerate Savings can earn a competitive APY. But customers will need to contend with several fees, including monthly maintenance fees, for checking and savings accounts.

Overall
Citibank is among the world’s largest financial institutions, with well over $1.5 trillion in assets. It offers a comprehensive selection of banking products, including various certificate of deposit accounts (CDs) and multiple checking and savings accounts. But whether you get a competitive yield on savings at Citi depends on where you live and whether you’re eligible for its Accelerate Savings account. For example, customers in California are not eligible for this account; the account Californians can open has a base APY that’s well below the Accelerate Savings APY.
Pros
-
Those in eligible markets for the Citi Accelerate Savings are able to earn a competitive yield on their savings accounts.
-
As one of the largest banks, Citibank offers unique advantages that come with scale, including global coverage in terms of branches and ATMs.
-
Citi’s mobile banking app is highly rated.
-
Citi tends to offer bank account bonuses for new customers who open a new account.
Cons
-
The yield on savings is low in certain markets.
-
Many of Citibank’s accounts charge monthly fees and require minimum balances to waive them.
Citibank banking products
Citi® Accelerate Savings Account
Pros
-
The Citi Accelerate Savings account offers a competitive APY.
-
There’s no minimum deposit required.
Cons
-
The Citi Accelerate Savings account is available only in select markets.
-
There’s a $4.50 monthly fee, though there are several ways to waive it.
The Citi Accelerate Savings account is only available in select markets but if you have access, you’ll get a good rate — comparable to what some online banks offer, which is unique because big institutions like Citibank rarely offer savings APYs that can compete with online banks. However, unlike many online banks, Citibank charges a monthly fee for this account, though it can be waived a couple of ways, including maintaining an average monthly balance of $500.
If you live in a state that’s not eligible for the Citi Accelerate account, your only option is the Citi Savings account, which has a low standard APY.

Citi® Certificates of Deposit
Pros
-
The minimum deposit required to open a CD is low.
-
There is a wide selection of CD terms available.
-
Citibank offers IRA CDs, a Step Up CD and a No Penalty CD.
Cons
-
Yields on many terms are low compared with what online banks offer.
-
The grace period before automatic renewal is short.
Citibank offers a wide selection of CDs, ranging from three months to five years. The rates on some CDs are good for a big bank, though not as good as what you may find at an online bank. The bank only shows rates after you input your ZIP code though, so your rates may be different from what Bankrate writers and editors saw when we reviewed.
If you do open up a CD here, pay extra attention when it’s set to mature as the grace period before your CD automatically renews is short: seven days rather than 10 days at some other banks.
Expert Insight
Though Citibank offers a step-up and no-penalty CD, they both have very low rates and likely won’t be worth it. You can find much higher rates on these kinds of specialty CDs elsewhere.

Citibank Regular Checking Account
Pros
-
Fees aren’t charged for overdrafts or returned items.
-
More than 65,000 fee-free ATMs are available nationwide.
Cons
-
When Regular Checking account customers don’t meet the requirements, Citi charges a $15 monthly maintenance fee.
-
$2.50 out-of-network ATM fee.
Citibank offers two checking accounts: Access Checking and Regular Checking. We scored the Regular Checking account, which comes with unlimited checking but charges a $15 monthly fee. The fee can be waived, though, if you qualify for one of Citi’s relationship tiers (by keeping $30,000 or more across Citi accounts) or if you maintain at least $250 in direct deposits each month.

| Citibank offers two checking accounts: Access Checking and Regular Checking. The Access Checking account, a checkless account, comes with a $5 monthly service fee. The Regular Checking account, which comes with unlimited checking, charges a $15 monthly fee. Either fee can be waived if you qualify for a relationship tier or if you maintain at least $250 in direct deposits. Both accounts come with access to more than 65,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide, but the bank charges a $2.50 fee for using an out-of-network ATM. Neither account charges overdraft nor returned item fees though Access Checking simply will deny transactions instead of letting them go through. | Chase Total Checking includes features such as access to more than 15,000 ATMs and 5,000 branches. The account has a monthly service fee of $15, which can be waived by meeting certain criteria, such as direct deposits totaling at least $500 each month or maintaining a minimum balance of $1,500. This account offers customers a mobile app for managing finances as well as services like Zelle for money transfers. | |

Customer experience
Customer support
Physical presence. Citibank has more than 650 branches in the U.S. and it supports customers in more than 180 countries. Account holders have access to more than 65,000 fee-free ATMs in the U.S. and thousands more overseas.
Customer service. You can easily find the bank’s customer service information on its website, but not the hours the call center is open. When Bankrate called to confirm the hours of operation, we learned it was 24/7, which is great, but we wish the bank would put that on the site so it’s clear to its customers when they can reach someone.
Digital experience
Highly rated mobile app. Citibank’s mobile app has a high rating on both the Apple App and Google Play stores. Collectively, more than five million users have reviewed the app. The app can be used to pay friends with Zelle, lock or unlock a card when it’s lost or stolen, set travel notices and even open a new account.
Website ease of use: You can find most of the important information you need on Citibank’s website, such as rates and fees. But the bank does make you work for it a bit sometimes. For example, you have to enter your ZIP code to see the rates because Citibank offers different rates and accounts by region.

Bankrate staff insights
"I have found customer service — both over the phone and in-person at a branch — to be very kind and helpful, and I have never had a problem accomplishing whatever I needed to do," said a Bankrate staff member who uses Citibank personally. "But the chat features on the app makes it unclear whether you’re speaking with a bot or an actual representative. Responses here are significantly delayed and communication is not fluid."
